Working on Minimums as Well as Maximums

    Last updated 6 days ago

If you are a fan of hitting the gym or the weights on a regular basis, you probably focus on working out and achieving as many maximums as you can. Lots of people do this – they consistently set themselves new targets to try and meet. It could be the amount of weight you can lift. It might even be the number of lengths of the pool you can swim. Whatever it might be, the focus is on how much you can do.

Maximums can be counterproductive, especially if you are continually trying to beat your personal best in the gym. Since everyone excels in different places, focusing on your good points might be the slowest way to achieve more. It sounds unlikely but it’s true. Let’s suppose you have found your strength is evident in performing upper body exercises, but when it comes to lower body exercises you struggle to achieve anything of note at all.

This is why it makes sense to think about your minimums. By doing so you can focus on the things you are not very good at, in order to become better at them. As such you will end up reducing these weaknesses so they become more equal when compared to your strengths. It’s a smart way to spend your time in the gym each time you go.

Steve participated in The Forum’s outdoor “Lunch Crunch” class with gym instructor, Katie McHugh, on Wednesday 8 February.

While Steve was working hard, Tim ate vanilla slices, tarts and cakes – well on the way to his 10 kilograms.

Benefits of a Fully Staffed, Professional Gym With Superior Facilities.

    Last updated 10 days ago

If you have decided to join a gym, you may be shopping around based on location, convenience, facilities and price. It’s important to take the time to think carefully before you make a decision on which gym to go for as you will hopefully be spending a lot of time there during your membership!

Because you may be spending a longer period of time at this gym and may have changing requirements during this period of membership, it’s important to think about the different facilities that you may want to use in future. For example, you may feel like you want to spend one night at the gym and another doing swimming lessons. You may also want access to other facilities like a rock climbing gym as well as professional and qualified personal trainers if you’re not getting the results that you want.

Most gyms won’t offer a large range of these services but some do and it’s worth taking into account the cost of having that flexibility. Premium health clubs like The Forum also have a strong focus on customer service and can help you with your enquiries to ensure that your gym experience is worth your time.

    The Damaging Effects of Smoking

    Last updated 11 days ago

Most people are aware that smoking is bad for our health. You probably know of the increased potential to get diseases such as lung cancer and heart disease and it’s estimated that between 80% and 90% of all deaths attributable to lung cancer occur as a result of smoking.

It’s not just the lungs, though; most other parts of the body are equally affected by smoking. Even if you visit health clubs on a regular basis you won’t cancel out the damage caused by regular or even occasional smoking.

Many heavy smokers find their skin ages far faster than it would do otherwise. Smoking will also adversely affect the breathing. This means that even if you feel inspired to take exercise, you will struggle to do as much as you would be able to otherwise.

There are many other detrimental effects of smoking that occur in the short term. The moment you start smoking a cigarette, the blood flow to the body’s extremities is reduced. You’ll also find you lose your appetite. You might think it’s a great way to keep your weight down, but it would be far better to quit smoking and get regular exercise than to smoke. You might even get help from the MyQuit Coach iPhone app. This can be personalised to help you improve your chances of waving goodbye to your cigarettes forever.

Start your new healthy lifestyle today by going to health clubs in suburbs like Cooks Hill and Mayfield in Newcastle. Contact The Forum Sports & Aquatic Centre on 02 4040 9588 for more information.

Tips for Getting a Beach Body

    Last updated 13 days ago

How satisfied are you with your body? Do you have a beach body or do you feel like you have the physique of a seal? If you’re dreading the thought of hitting the Newcastle beaches in the near future, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways you can move towards getting the body you want. From regular swimming sessions to hiring a personal trainer, there are lots of ways to take that first positive step.

    Check your diet

For example try taking a close look at your diet. If you tend to eat lots of fatty foods, this certainly won’t be helping the situation. Take this opportunity to get lean by eating lean. Cut out the fatty foods and replace them with lean meats, healthier options and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Your body will appreciate the natural foods and you’ll start to feel and look better in no time. Eating healthily is also about building good eating habits. Personal trainers in Newcastle can advise you on the building blocks of a healthy diet.

    Enjoy your exercise

You should also take the time to choose a form of exercise you know you will enjoy. It’s no good hitting the gym and working with personal trainers if you don’t enjoy it. Swimming would be a good choice if you enjoy getting into the water or go online and find a sports team in your area. Many health and fitness centres have their own pools you can use. Regular exercise will start to burn any stored fat you have and propel you towards the beach body you really want.
